Maplewood – Maplewood (2004)
22/07/10
Maplewood is a low-key indie rock supergroup with members of Champale, Koester, Cub Country, and Nada Surf gathered together in the spirit of ’70s canyon rock. Their self-titled debut brings back hazy memories of groups like America, Bread, and CSNY. The kind of groups who always seemed ready to break out their acoustic guitars and serenade the sweet hippie chicks around campfires and in hazy bars with heartfelt lead vocals and harmonies, ringing open-chord strumming, lazy tempos, and occasional pedal steel for added melancholy. There are also echoes of more modern bands like R.E.M. on “Darlene,” Lambchop on “Bright Eyes,” and Teenage Fanclub on the chiming “Morning Star.” The spirit of Matthew Sweet also hovers over the proceedings, as he’s been treading these light rock boards for quite a while. So there you have all the influences and connections, all of which don’t mean much if Maplewood can’t deliver the songs. Luckily, they do. Tunes like “Indian Summer,” “Little Dreamer Girl,” and the quiet epic “Desert Queen” sound like they were taken right off a Time/Life Sounds of the 70′s comp. The rest are solid and memorable too. They escape being mere revivalists by investing their hearts into the material. There is no winking or obvious lifting of melodies. They create the feel of the sensitive California ’70s with an easy, sweet manner and plenty of laid-back soul. Not bad for a bunch of short-haired, East Coast fellas. Line them up next to the lovely Autumn Defense and let the ’70s begin again. ~ Tim Sendra, AMG

Shed Seven – A Maximum High (1996)
21/05/10
ALLMUSIC Producing five massive U.K. singles, Shed Seven’s sophomore effort is the band’s most consistently engaging album. Borrowing more from trad-rock than many of their peers, Shed Seven essentially created an album full of inspirational anthems — three of the album’s singles seem to deal with achievement of some sort. This is no drawback, however, as many of the songs on A Maximum High are excellent shout-along, arena-ready numbers. The set as a whole is far more consistent than their spotty debut and contains very little filler. While Shed Seven scarcely explore any unfamiliar territory, A Maximum High is a very consistent and listenable disc of mid-1990s mainstream rock & roll. [by Jason Damas]

POPMATTERS The story of Nobunny is the story of a mysterious bunny-masked stranger from Tuscon, Arizona who began his strange career as an attempted Animal Elvis Impersonator. Touring the mock-Presley circuit as Elvis Bunny, and busking on the street as No-Money-Bunny on the side, Nobunny eventually made his way to Chicago, where he debuted his own material on stage the very day that Joey Ramone died (the set was dedicated to his memory). In his always unpredictable live sets, Nobunny has been known to pass the mask (and attendant duties) off to others on the occasion of losing his voice, strip down to his underwear (though the mask always stays on) and to schedule conflicting show dates staffed with Nobunny imposters. On one notable occasion, he was even assaulted and robbed while performing on the streets of Philadelphia.
Complete with a cleverly Ramones-mocking album cover and the “Land of a 1,000 Dances”-aping lead off track “Nobunny Loves You”, Nobunny’s barely-full-length debut (12 songs in just under 23 minutes) is a quick and dirty blast of lo-fi garage rock that would feel right at home on both a Nuggets compilation and a late-70s NYC punk club. Staffed with an array of pawn shop instruments—a ‘60s-style organ on “Not That Good”, a cheapo drum machine on “I Am a Girlfriend” and “Tina Goes to Work”—and all performed in Nobunny’s authentically shouty and nasal vocals, Nobunny never strays far from garage’s bubblegum roots. The result is an album that is fun and catchy, but which leaves the lingering impression that Love Visions is still only a fraction of the Nobunny experience (…) [By Jer Fairall]

TREBLEZINE.COM When done poorly, garage rock is usually still not that bad. The very nature of the genre lends itself to sloppiness and imperfection, and the rawer, the better, in many cases, but without good songwriting, a lot of garage rock records tend to blend together in a big mess of static and power chords. When garage rock is done well, however, it can be the most exciting music on earth. Even the most traditional rock `n’ roll bands can be an explosive affair with the right touches, just look to Black Lips or Rocket From The Crypt for a prime example of stage presence and ass kicking material. Though not yet to either of those bands’ level of notoriety, King Khan is one such artist who makes garage rock transcendent with a combination of flashy, and sometimes barely there, stage getups and truly amazing, I’d even say classic, songwriting.
Though part of the time, Montreal native Khan performs with Mark Sultan as duo King Khan and the BBQ Show, he truly reaches his potential as a showman and songwriter with What Is?!, recorded with his other band, The Shrines. On top of Khan’s manic, raspy vocals and power chords galore, the band’s sound is densely fleshed out with fiery organ licks and a horn section that could have been pulled straight from a Stax session. What Is?! is somewhere between The Stooges and James Brown, with a dash of Love for a psych-folk effect, and Sun Ra for the group’s most truly out there moments.
Opener “(How Can I Keep You) Outta Harm’s Way” has the sound of a long lost garage 45, its triumphant stomp and ultra-catchy riffs the stuff that music geek obsessions are made of. The incredible “Welfare Bread” is smooth and soulful, with some of the fuzz pushed aside in favor of a lovely, summertime groove. “Land Of The Freak” kicks into high gear with all cylinders firing and Khan wailing like the Godfather of Soul himself, and “I See Lights” swirls like a trippy outtake from Forever Changes. Khan even vocally sounds like Arthur Lee, a similarity that carries over into the lush standout “69 Faces of Love.” On “Cosmic Serenade,” the Shrines turn to an exotic, jazzy, and somewhat dissonant sound (here’s where the Sun Ra comes in) to magnificent effect, and closer “The Ballad of Lady Godiva” is a fuzzy, yet endearing dirge, closing the album with a distorted sort of calm.
As many ’60s style throwback garage rock records are released each year, it’s encouraging to know that there are artists like Khan, striving to make it fun again. King Khan and The Shrines have the complete package—a big, bold sound, a charismatic frontman, and a stage presence that could catch any ambivalent hipster in its good time, high energy tractor beam. There may not be anything all that new about what King Khan and the Shrines are doing, but nobody else has recorded a straight-up rock `n’ roll record this good in ages. [by Jeff Terich]
