The Style Council – The Singular Adventures of the Style Council (1989)
18/08/10
The Style Council’s albums were always weighed down by their far-reaching musical ambitions, which meant that their ideas were usually best heard on their singles. And while this period of Paul Weller’s career has been criticized heavily, he wrote several excellent songs during the Style Council, most of which are featured on the fine compilation The Singular Adventures of the Style Council. Not all of the 16 songs are first-rate, as it begins to lose steam toward the end of the band’s life, but “My Ever Changing Moods,” “You’re the Best Thing,” “Long Hot Summer,” “Shout to the Top!,” “A Solid Bond in Your Heart,” “Money Go Round,” “Walls Come Tumbling Down,” and “Speak Like a Child” are terrific, and make the collection worthwhile for fans of the Jam and Weller’s solo career, as well as fans of New Romantic new wave and jazzy sophisti-pop. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AMG

The Pandoras – It’s About Time (1984)
08/07/10
ALLMUSIC Avoiding the sputter of careerist garage rock for a spectacularly bleary haunted house feel, It’s About Time was a welcome alternative to art-punk, synth pop, and the power hunger of bands like X and the Cramps. That’s not to say that the Pandoras didn’t owe themselves to an extinct musical movement, but thanks mostly due to Paula Pierce, who fronted and wrote virtually everything here, rough charms like “Cry on My Own,” “I Live My Life,” and “Hot Generation,” had a musicality to them that allowed the Easybeats-like throb to bob and sway instead of simply blaring out into a din. Years later, much of It’s About Time still shines in its muddily produced, tonally confident swagger, remaining one of 1984′s best garage-punk releases. ~ Dean Carlson

ALLMUSIC The Bats’ first full album continues the early promise of their EPs and, with only the slightest deviations and changes since, established their sound for just about everything that followed. Scott and company may not be the most willfully experimental of musicians, but when they’re on — more often the case than not — their lovely, melancholic songs simply hit the spot. Woodward forms the perfect singing partner for Scott, while guest violinist Alastair Galbraith brings his talent to the fore as he has for so many other New Zealand bands. “Treason” makes for a good start to the album, but the real standout on Daddy’s Highway is the surging “North by North.” Featuring a fantastic Galbraith violin solo, it gives the band the opportunity to show its sometime hidden strengths for more energetic, nervous material. Scott‘s vocal performance is one of his best, and the quick, on-edge pace seems to get even more so as the song continues. Quieter songs unsurprisingly abound as well, from the understated sweetness of “Sir Queen” to the gentle keyboard-touched “Candidate.” “Tragedy” is one of the best in this vein, ending in a disturbing low drone (or at least as much of a drone as the generally quick-length songs by the Bats allow for). Though Daddy’s Highway suffers a touch from the same problem that affects all Bats releases — an increasing sameness, especially towards album’s end — it’s still a great full album debut. Disco e banda sensacionais, super recomendado!!!
