Grass Show – Something Smells Good In Stinkville (1996)
30/05/10
ALLMUSIC Never mind the title. Grass-Show’s debut album Something Smells Good in Stinkville is an infectious fusion of stylish Brit-pop, quirky new wave, punchy ’70s power-pop and breezy Euro-pop. The band’s strength is their melodic sensibilities, and while their clever lyrics can come across as smug, the light, frothy hooks and melodies are positively effervescent. Disco e banda sensacionais, super recomendado!!!

ALLMUSIC So, just what exactly were Skids? Punks with O-levels, new wave cop-outs, or just chance-takers and opportunists? The answer is probably a combination of all three. Far more important, however, is the fact that they left behind a clutch of great, if universally pretentious, singles. On album, it was hard not to get a little miffed at Richard Jobson‘s would-be aristocrat pop nonsense. Still, this debut had some good tunes, courtesy of pre-Big Country Stuart Adamson, like “The Saints Are Coming” and, of course, the wonderful “Into the Valley.” Of huge importance to Skids fans is that the CD reissue includes the original live B-side to the latter, “TV Stars,” a song which will mean nothing to anyone who didn’t grow up watching British television, but a whole heap to those who did. The Passions were one of the most critically respected Pop groups of the ’80s, best known for their huge hit single ‘I’m In Love With A German Film Star’, among the most distinctive, atmospheric records of the era. Label mates with the likes of The Cure and Associates, the group’s original studio albums have never before been re-released. This is the band’s most commercially successful album, originally released on Polydor Records in 1981.The package has been assembled with completely unpublished photographs from the band’s own archive, alongside the memories of all four original members, and a breakdown of the rationale and recording of each and every track.

ALLMUSIC At the time of its release in October of 1980, Rockpile’s Seconds of Pleasure was viewed in some quarters as a little disappointing, which shows that there are considerable pitfalls that come with high expectations. There was a reason why the album was highly anticipated. During the late ’70s, Rockpile was considered one of the great rock & roll bands, earning a reputation for blowing away every headlining act they played with, and they were just as good on record, acting as the backing band for solo albums by the group’s co-leaders, Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds. Although they were a strong presence on the road and on the charts, they had yet to release a recording underneath the Rockpile name, so when Seconds of Pleasure finally appeared, fans and critics alike expected a rip-roaring, rampaging rock & roll record, since that’s what their live performances were.
What they got was a bit different — it was still a rock & roll record, but it wasn’t down and dirty; it was bright, propulsive, and poppy, filled with big melodic hooks and polished until it glistened. Not what was expected of Rockpile in 1980, perhaps, but time has been nothing but kind to this record and, judged on its own merits, it’s one of hell of a good time. At its core, Seconds of Pleasure is an invigorating blend of the strengths of Lowe and Edmunds, who may have had a shared love of pre-Beatles rock & roll — particularly Chuck Berry and the Everly Brothers — but had very different aesthetics. Edmunds was serious and dedicated to detail, to the point of single-handedly re-creating the sound of Phil Spector and Sun Studios on his early solo albums. On the other hand, there was a reason why Lowe was given the nickname “Basher” — he loved to get in the studio and bash out the music, preserving the energy, passion, and humor of a band at its peak. Eventually, this caused great conflict between the two — the band’s split was anything but friendly, and a reunion for Lowe‘s 1990 album, Party of One, was tentative and testy — but on albums like Nick‘s Labour of Lust and Dave‘s Repeat When Necessary (both 1979), it resulted in tremendous music. But both of those records were true solo albums, capturing the personality of each musician. … Read More… [by Stephen Thomas Erlewine]

LTM 18 remastered tracks. LTM are pleased to announce the very first CD by The Room, the cult Liverpool alt pop band who released three albums and a slew of singles between 1980 and 1985. Formed by songwriter Dave Jackson and bassist Becky Stringer in 1979, The Room reaped critical acclaim with singles such as “In Sickness and In Health” and “Things Have Learned to Walk That Ought to Crawl”, as well as the album “Indoor Fireworks” (1982) and several John Peel sessions for the BBC. In 1983-84 the band had a shot a chart success on a major label, with the excellent album “In Evil Hour” produced by John Porter (Smiths) and mercurial Television personality Tom Verlaine. In 1985 the core of the band morphed into Benny Profane. In 1991 they became Dust, and in 1995 Dead Cowboys, who continue to record today.
No Dream is an unashamed Best Of compilation spanning The Room’s entire career, comprising singles, choice album cuts and unreleased demo tracks from their final studio session. From the monochrome post-punk of debut single “Motion” to the rich, organ and guitar patterned textures of “In Evil Hour,” even a cursory listen reveals The Room as one of the most criminally underrated bands of their time.

ALLMUSIC Blank Dogs’ backstory was kept a secret for the early stages of his career, and his enigmatic stature filled the curiosity of bloggers and magazine columnists, who became infatuated with the idea of a mysterious persona possessed by a seemingly inexhaustible creative spirit. Of course he couldn’t keep up the hidden identity charade forever, but Mike Sniper (probably not his real surname), the meek wizard behind the Blank Dogs curtain, maintained his anonymity for the better part of two years by hiding his face in wraps and bandages for press shots. It may sound like a cheap gimmick for the sake of gaining attention, but his intentions were pure: he hoped to avoid getting pigeon-holed as just another lo-fi/noise pop artist from the overplayed musical hotbed of Brooklyn. This desire to be seen as a unique individual and not just a product of his environment comes through full force in his music. There’s no confusing the inscrutable sound of Blank Dogs. It is what it is; singular and unwavering.
Like his last LP, On Two Sides, Under and Under is an obscured, murky muddle of home recorded guitar, bass, synthesizers, and organ beats, all flattened by lots of distortion. This may all sound familiar for those keeping up with the trend of “No-fi,” the “Shitgaze,” ahem, movement, or whatever you wish to coin the purposely raw recording style, but while Blank Dogs’ music is likely to gain comparisons to Wavves, Psychedelic Horseshit, and his In the Red labelmates Crystal Stilts and Vivian Girls (who both appear on the album), Under and Under has a slightly different aesthetic. Instead of drawing from sounds of the ’60s with chamber reverbs and garage guitars, the bulk of Blank Dogs’ songs are musically rooted in early ’80s post-punk, goth, and new wave. The bassline of “Setting Fire to Your House” could be lifted from the Cure‘s “Jumping Someone Else’s Train,” and “The New Things” shines with Gary Numan synths and a Martin Hannett “recorded in a silo” sheen. It’s a fair guess that he has a workshop full of chorus, flange, and delay pedals from that era at his disposal — considering that every instrument and vocal line is run through one effect or another, making most of the album unintelligible or indecipherable — but it’s just that limitless, everything-including-the-kitchen-sink way of working that makes Blank Dogs so special and interesting. It also doesn’t hurt that he has hooks to spare. [by Jason Lymangrover]
