VA – The Sound of Leamington Spa Volume 1-5
24/07/10
The three record companies involved in these releases – Clarendon Records, Firestation Records and Bilberry Records – all had the same idea for the compilation series independently. As they started talking to each other they realised that if the individuals from these companies wanted to see these recordings made available once more, it made sense that there was a large listening public of like minds. Some of the groups are obscure, others are better known, but it was deliberate policy not to release the more familiar artists of the time. After all, even though these are old recordings, it was still felt important to be offering something new, something that would give the listener that thrill of hearing something unexpected and delicious for the first time. Even the most knowledgeable and devoted 80s indie-pop fan will make new discoveries in uncharted territories here.
The Sound of Leamington Spa is a series of CDs and LPs that give people the chance to get re-acquainted with, or discover anew, a back catalogue of British pop gems that had been banished to an airwave graveyard. Like the legendary Pebbles albums that showcased the hidden wonders of 1960s garage so eloquently, the Leamington Spa series provides a valuable public service to the hungry independent pop music explorer, who wanders through the past as well as the present in search of unmapped landmarks. ~ TWEE.NET

Minks – Funeral Song 7″ (2010)
16/06/10
PITCHFORK You name your latest track “Funeral Song”, it cheers on the end of summertime, and it features a bass line straight off a Cure record. Pretty miserable right? Turns out to be the opposite, actually. Bouncy and buoyant, the latest from Captured Tracks band Minks reminds us that quite a bit of even gloomy, gray-raincoat post-punk also had a spring in its step and a shake in its hips. Minks capture that dynamic nicely on “Funeral Song”, painting a small-scale drama that acts as a sort of riposte to the glut of sun-soaked, blissed-out indie pop that has dominated certain corners of underground music the past year or so. (The melodramatic side of the song is visualized nicely by its video, which uses images from Anne Baxter’s rags-to-third-wheel film Carnival Story.) So never mind that its central lyric isn’t timely in this hemisphere– the farewell here is to creating nostalgic 1980s pop out of nothing but texture and drift. ~ Scott Plagenhoef

Felt – Absolute Classic Masterpieces (1992)
14/06/10
ALLMUSIC Absolute Classic Masterpieces documents the dark jangle pop of Felt between the years of 1979 and 1985; it’s a best-of collection for a band that always deserved more attention. The tracks run in reverse chronological order, starting with “Primitive Painters,” a song that charts the territory wherethe Cocteau Twins, the Fall, and the Smiths overlap, and ending with the very first demo single “Index.” The order of the tracks means that you are listening to the band devolve into its influences, and the effect is enjoyable. “Primitive Painters” is a lost treat if ever one existed; along with the next three tracks, it was produced by Robin Guthrie of the Cocteau Twins. “Primitive Painters” also features Elizabeth Frazer of the Cocteau Twins on vocals. Guthrie is not the only famed producer whose work appears here; three John Leckie tracks are also included, from the Strange Idols Pattern & Other Short Stories album. While most of the slower songs appear toward the end of the album, making it a somewhat sleepy affair as it winds down, there are charms like “The World Is as Soft as Lace” to liven things up. “Penelope Tree” sounds a bit like Lou Reed fronting the Cure. There’s great material to be found throughout the work of Felt, so this collection would work regardless of its running order. Newcomers looking for their first Felt album should start here, with the knowledge that there is quite a bit of dark atmosphere layered over the pop charms within. While these songs might not be masterpieces, as the album title would have you believe, there are many near-masterpieces of moody jangle pop just waiting to be rediscovered. ~ Tim DiGravina

ALLMUSIC The Icicle Works’ self-titled debut as a whole is an excellent example of post-punk power and beauty. “Chop the Tree” alone is something of a lost classic, with Hugh Jones‘ note-perfect production, Sharrock‘s pounding, complex rhythm attack, and McNabb‘s exquisite singing providing one heck of a start. Indeed, McNabb here sounds like a clear precursor to singers like Neil Hannon of the Divine Comedy and the equal of the precise diction and passion of Edwyn Collins. When it comes to the hits, “Love Is a Wonderful Colour” is another prime vocal showcase, with a sparkling guitar/keyboard lead arrangement and a constantly shifting but never pointlessly show-off bass/drums pace. Frankly, the members of U2 must have wished they could be so emotional and so soaring at this point in their careers. As for “Birds Fly,” the song stands as a joyous rave-up of quick drums and shimmering guitars with an inspiring, frenetic chorus tempered by a gentle, half-whispered conclusion. Further examples of the group’s abilities crop up song for song: the amazing guitar break and serene conclusion of “Reaping the Rich Harvest,” the clean crisp flow of “As the Dragonfly Flies” interrupted by a down and dirty guitar line, the soft pipe start to “Lovers’ Day,” and more. Concluding with the slow burn fire of “Nirvana,” The Icicle Works is early-’80s U.K. rock at its considerable best. [by Ned Raggett]

ALLMUSIC Easterhouse sounds so much like the Chameleons on Contenders‘ opening track, “Out on Your Own,” that the credits need to be double-checked. As with the Chameleons, Easterhouse likes to set a mood, often a somber one. Andy Perry‘s dour vocals and his brother, Ivor Perry‘s driving, shimmering riffs summarize the golden years of English post-punk; the moody atmospherics of the Chameleons, the angry folk-rock of New Model Army, the summery jangle of the Smiths — they’re all here. What Contenders doesn’t have are enough songs that are worthy of being heard again. Although the crackling energy of Contenders easily knocks out Easterhouse’s languid second LP, Waiting for the Redbird, it still falls short; the album becomes increasingly less interesting as it unfolds. The initial three tracks on Contenders — “Out on Your Own,” “Whistling in the Dark,” and “Nineteen Sixty Nine” — raise expectations for the rest of the LP; sung and played with the relentless enthusiasm of a young band unleashed in the studio for the first time, they’d make a sensational EP. Unfortunately, Easterhouse has a tendency to meander, and sluggish songs such as “Lenin in Zurich,” “To Live Like This,” and “Estates” drag the album down. Moreover, Andy Perry‘s voice is buried beneath the mix; consequently, his political lyrics are not always intelligible, draining them of the power they probably had on paper. Contenders is only half as good as it could’ve been. [by Michael Sutton]

ALLMUSIC The Edge of the World is a pivotal album in the Mekons’ enormous oeuvre, for it’s the record that introduces Sally Timms‘ remarkable voice into the group’s mix of country, folk, punk, and noise textures. Either on its own or in tandem with longtime singers Jon Langford and Tom Greenhalgh, Timms‘ voice adds an attractive new texture to The Edge of the World. However, in retrospect, this is not the countrified album its initial reviews claimed, or at least not entirely. The opening “Hello Cruel World” is a grinding post-punk downer that slowly accelerates into a desperate, hoarse cry with no noticeable country or folk elements. “Bastard” ups the anger and desperation considerably, this time adding a stomping fiddle tune and one of Langford‘s most spiteful, spittle-flecked vocals. Timms makes her lead vocal debut on the majestically dismissive “Oblivion,” which has the most striking chorus on the album. After that strong trio of tunes, the rest of the album refines those musical styles and lyrical themes to varying degrees, with the rollicking “Slightly South of the Border” and the remarkable “Alone and Forsaken” the highlights. The Edge of the World is one of the Mekons’ finest efforts. [by Stewart Mason]

ALLMUSIC So, just what exactly were Skids? Punks with O-levels, new wave cop-outs, or just chance-takers and opportunists? The answer is probably a combination of all three. Far more important, however, is the fact that they left behind a clutch of great, if universally pretentious, singles. On album, it was hard not to get a little miffed at Richard Jobson‘s would-be aristocrat pop nonsense. Still, this debut had some good tunes, courtesy of pre-Big Country Stuart Adamson, like “The Saints Are Coming” and, of course, the wonderful “Into the Valley.” Of huge importance to Skids fans is that the CD reissue includes the original live B-side to the latter, “TV Stars,” a song which will mean nothing to anyone who didn’t grow up watching British television, but a whole heap to those who did. Label mates with the likes of The Cure and Associates, the group’s original studio albums have never before been re-released. This is the band’s most commercially successful album, originally released on Polydor Records in 1981.The package has been assembled with completely unpublished photographs from the band’s own archive, alongside the memories of all four original members, and a breakdown of the rationale and recording of each and every track.
